Cane Non Mangia Cane

I leave my number for him on a piece of paper,
wide-mouthed white post it like a set trap,
and he thinks I am ensnared, easy to prey
but I wait patient for his pointed teeth to chatter
to call, the scavenger, no true predator as I am
baited with carrion, his fat to feed my young
with his beady blue eyes and his savory bits,
I am teaching them to know the taste of their
enemies, to draw them close, to lure them in.
Winter will ensue as such, the weak ones
blindly feeling their way towards our warmth,
we will stack bones bodies deep in a pile,
we will stretch their flesh for our scribes,
we will paint our walls with their blood,
we will wear their teeth strung like jewels,
we will grind their dust into the ground,
and we will rise fertile and crowned.

He who cannot howl will not find his pack.
